Text to Speech Settings
Configure TTS engine, voice, speed, and reading mode.
Customize how Dial8 reads text aloud.
Engine Selection
Choose between two neural TTS engines in Settings > Text to Speech:
- Piper TTS — Default engine with Amy (bundled) and Ryan (downloadable) voices
- Kokoro TTS — Alternative engine with Bella, Adam, Emma, and George voices
Voice Selection
Each engine has its own voice options. Voices not yet downloaded will show a download button with size information. Downloaded voices can be used immediately.
Reading Mode
- Read — Reads text exactly as written
- Summarize — Uses Apple Intelligence to summarize the text before reading (requires macOS 26.0+)
Speed
Set the default playback speed from 0.5x to 4x. Speed can also be adjusted during playback without restarting.
Voice Download Management
Voice model files are downloaded on demand and stored locally. You can manage downloaded voices from the settings screen.
