How It Works
Voice Notes provide a complete recording workflow: start a recording, get a live transcript as you speak, and when you're done, the AI processes everything into a structured note with summaries, action items, and insights.
Note Types
Each recording can be classified as one of four types, each with specialized AI processing:

Dual-Stream Recording
For meetings, Dial8 captures two audio streams simultaneously:
- Microphone — Your voice, labeled as "Me" in the transcript
- System Audio — Other participants' voices, labeled as "Them" (requires macOS 14.4+)
This produces a speaker-separated transcript so the AI can identify who said what.
Live Transcription
As you record, Whisper transcribes your speech in real-time using streaming mode. Segments appear with timestamps as you speak, so you can see the transcript building live.
Recording Controls
- Start/Stop — Begin and end a recording
- Pause/Resume — Temporarily pause without ending the session
- Cancel — Discard the recording and delete the draft note
- Resume — Continue recording an existing note, appending new content
You can also type private notes during the recording that are included as context for AI processing but don't appear in the transcript.
AI Processing
When you stop recording, the AI automatically:
- Generates a descriptive title
- Creates a structured summary based on the note type
- Extracts action items with owners, due dates, and confidence scores
- Identifies key insights and themes
Action items extracted from meetings are automatically added to your Dashboard task list.
Meeting Detection
Dial8 can automatically detect when you join a meeting by monitoring for:
- Meeting apps — Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Slack, Google Meet, Webex, Discord, BlueJeans
- Microphone activation — Confirms you're actually on a call, not just browsing
When both conditions are met, you'll get a prompt to start recording. Calendar event data is used to pre-fill meeting title, participants, and project assignment.
Enable this in Settings > Meeting Detection.
Calendar Integration
After recording, you can link a calendar event to the note. When linked:
- Calendar participants are imported into the note
- Meeting title and description provide AI context
- The note is associated with the correct project
Voice note transcripts are crash-resilient — every new segment is saved to the database immediately, so no content is lost if the app quits unexpectedly.
